Whale shark in the Maldives: the tour from Dhigurah, five meters of whale shark and fifty snorkelers

by · · updated

Translated from the German original.

Mask on, fins on, into the water. I look down, camera on, and there it is, swimming straight toward me and passing underneath me. What a beautiful animal. Great colors in the sunlight. Its movements are so slow, and yet it is so fast. Five meters long; for a whale shark, that is still a young animal.

Then comes the rest. Behind the animal there are about fifty snorkelers and ten divers in the water, and they roll over us like a train. It’s like the final sprint of the Tour de France in Paris: fins, hands, arms, everywhere. Terrible.

View from below: dozens of snorkelers with fins at the water's surface, far below the whale shark moves alone through the blue, Maldives.
The group above, the animal below. That's how it looked most of the time.

Is the whale shark tour in the Maldives worth it? For the animal, yes, but you need to know about the crowds before you book. Whale sharks are in the South Ari Atoll all year round, and from Dhigurah it’s about an hour by boat. You’re not alone with them there: on our day in August 2026, about ten boats were at the spot. If you want to see the whale shark without these crowds, plan your day in the season from May to November at Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll around the full moon. The chances are good there of seeing mantas and whale sharks, and rangers limit how many people are allowed in the water. I myself saw many mantas there, but not a whale shark.

Dhigurah whale shark tour: how does it work?

The whale shark tours start on Dhigurah, a local island in the South Ari Atoll of the Maldives. Dhigurah is the island for boat days. Snorkeling from the beach is weak. Above water, though, it is one of the most beautiful islands we have seen: a very long beach under palm trees, forest behind it. And a sandbank that runs far out into the turquoise, as if it had been built for vacation photos.

On Monday and Tuesday of our week, not a single operator had seen an animal. The boats pass sightings on to each other by radio. On Wednesday one was sighted again, and we thought: then let’s risk it. On Thursday, August 6, 2026, we went out. On board there were life jackets for children and anyone who wanted one.

Our guides had fairly told us before booking that it would be crowded. I had also seen videos of it myself. I still hoped for the best, and that is part of being honest.

About an hour’s ride in heavy swell, and then about ten boats are already on the horizon. The spot is called Rangali Madivaru. Everyone gets ready, mask on, fins on. Whale sharks usually swim against the current, which is why we are let into the water ahead of it.

Five meters, in the sunlight. That's what you ride out an hour for.

Swimming with whale sharks in the Maldives: how crowded is it?

After that first moment below me, we try to follow. Sometimes I still catch a glimpse of the whale shark, but mostly there’s an arm in the way or a snorkeler right next to the animal. For a photo or a video I almost never have a clear view. Only when it changes direction can I film freely for a few seconds. What the Insta360 did for me in this crowd, I have written up in my camera comparison.

A whale shark moves full-length through the blue, above it a freediver and several snorkelers at the surface, Maldives.
One freediver, several snorkelers, one animal.

At some point it gets too much for me, and I swim back to the boat. With a last look down, I see it slowly gliding off into the depths.

On board we were happy, of course; we were excited. But nobody was really exuberantly satisfied afterward. A fellow passenger didn’t see the animal at all. Right at the start she had lost her companions and didn’t want to swim alone among all the others. So she went back to the boat. An hour’s ride out, and then that.

The second stop of the same day showed how it can be done. At Bodufinolhu Thila there was only our boat with about ten people. We drifted along the reef with the current for half an hour and saw two small reef sharks, a turtle and lots of colorful fish. Twenty meters visibility, sunny. Above all it was the calm, and that nothing was hectic. It felt like relaxing after a stressful day.

A sea turtle hovers above the reef top of Bodufinolhu Thila in clear water.
Second stop, same boat, same day: ten people instead of sixty.

And there it was only about a reef, not about one of the most beautiful and impressive animals in the sea. Both spots belong to Dhigurah. Their readings are on the island page.

What do the guides say about the crowds?

In the evening at the hotel, I asked our tour guide about it. The answer was clear: it has gotten worse. It’s now difficult, he said, to even find a whale shark that doesn’t already have a big cluster of tourists around it.

On another island the subject came up again. We agreed: these tours should be regulated, the way it has long been done at Hanifaru Bay. And we agreed just as much that this is hard to put into practice.

Those were two conversations with two guides, not a survey. But they were the people who go out every day.

Why are whale shark tours so hard to regulate?

On paper, rules have long existed. For the protected area in South Ari Atoll: at least three meters distance from the body, four from the tail, and within a radius of 250 meters around the animal at most six boats, the ranger boat included, and at most sixty people in the water. How far the ten boats on our day were from the whale shark, I didn’t see. Fifty people swam behind it, plus ten divers. Back in 2021, researchers wrote in the journal Scientific Reports that the code of conduct for the whale sharks in the South Ari Atoll is frequently broken.

At Hanifaru Bay, the limit works because it is a bay. A manageable area that you drive into, with rangers keeping an eye on it. Whoever is in, is in. Whoever waits, waits outside.

Several manta rays swim through the frame at the same time at Hanifaru Bay in the Maldives, one of them close to the camera.
Hanifaru Bay: several mantas at once, one close to the camera.

With the whale sharks there is none of that. Rangali Madivaru is open sea. No edge, no entrance, no area that could be marked off. The whale shark follows its path, the boats find it by radio, and in the morning nobody knows where it will be. You would have to control the open sea, plus every operator who has a boat.

I could write here that I wish there were fewer boats at the animal. That’s not my place to say. I booked the tour even though the guides had told me beforehand that it would be crowded, and even though I knew the videos. I was one of the fifty. What I can do instead: tell what it’s like when fifty people swim after the same animal at the same time. Whoever reads this and goes anyway does so with open eyes. I had the warning too.

Best time to see whale sharks in the Maldives

In the South Ari Atoll there is no whale shark season in the strict sense. The protected area there extends to Dhigurah, and whale sharks stay in it all year round. We were there in early August, in the rainy season, and even then there were days without a single animal.

We had four nights on Dhigurah, and that was a good thing: we could wait for a sighting. Also, count on waves. The ride out was rough for us, and the crossing to Kamadhoo two days later was too, with high waves.

It’s different at Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll. There the mantas come in the season from May to November, and around the full moon you have a good chance of seeing mantas and whale sharks together. When exactly the most animals are there is in the article about the manta season at Hanifaru Bay.

Where to see whale sharks in the Maldives without the crowds

On the same trip I came across two options that promise the same experience without the crowds. One I experienced myself, the other I was only told about.

On August 14 I was at Hanifaru Bay, and there I saw for myself that it can be done differently. The bay is part of the excursion program from Maalhos. Rangers monitor it, and according to the management plan, at most eighty snorkelers are allowed in the water at the same time. One day, it seems, it’s the resorts’ turn, the next the local islands’. Boats enter very slowly so that no animals are injured.

Several manta rays move at the same time through the plankton-clouded water of Hanifaru Bay.
Hanifaru Bay, eight days later: around fifty animals, and rangers keep watch.

The result: around fifty mantas, thirty to forty minutes in the water. Because the bay is large, people spread out. It wasn’t the kind of chaos it was with the whale sharks. I didn’t see a whale shark there. If you can time your day for the full moon, you have good chances there of exactly what I was searching for with fifty others. Only at a spot with regulated access.

The second option was also offered to us on Maalhos: snorkeling with whale sharks at night. Floodlights are pointed at the water, the light brings the plankton up, and the plankton is usually followed by mantas or whale sharks. Everything happens in this one cone of light, with far fewer people. We didn’t take part; the weather was too bad. So I don’t know what it’s really like there. But the guides spoke much more positively about it than about the day tour.

I came across this pattern more often in the Maldives. On one boat tour, nurse sharks were fed, and calm bottom dwellers turned into a scrum. At Turtle Reef near Rasdhoo, on the other hand, sharks moved past us unbothered, because nobody helped nature along. With the first manta I ever saw, no rule was needed at all; there was simply nobody else there.

My conclusion

The whale shark was one of the most beautiful and impressive animals I have seen in the sea. But the crowd behind it is just as much a part of the tour from Dhigurah. Plan several nights on the island, so you can wait for a sighting instead of booking on the off chance. And if you have the choice, put your whale shark day between May and November at Hanifaru Bay around the full moon. It isn’t guaranteed there either: on my day I saw mantas, no whale shark.

Frequently asked questions

When can you see whale sharks in the Maldives?

In the South Ari Atoll, whale sharks live all year round; there is no fixed season there. Still, a sighting is never certain: in our week in August, on two days no operator saw an animal. At Hanifaru Bay the chances are good around the full moon.

How much is the Dhigurah whale shark tour?

In August 2026 we paid ninety US dollars per adult and forty-five for children under twelve. The ride takes about an hour.

How close can you get to a whale shark?

According to the rules of the protected area, no closer than three meters to the body and four meters to the tail. Touching is prohibited.

Is the whale shark tour suitable for children?

Children under twelve pay half, and there are life jackets on board. Expect swell on the ride and crowds in the water: a fellow passenger didn’t see the animal because she had lost her companions.

All four islands of this trip are in the Maldives destination guide, and the reef sharks and mantas without the crowds on Rasdhoo. Which other sharks I came across while snorkeling in the Maldives, I will tell in its own article.
