Sharks in the Maldives: are they dangerous when snorkeling?

In short The small reef sharks on the shallow reef are harmless to snorkelers in the Maldives – we met them from the beach in April 2025 and in August 2026.

Translated from the German original.

While snorkeling I estimated visibility, water temperature and depth, just as I experienced them on the days I was there. On dives the dive computer measured depth and duration, and values with a named source show what is usual there, not how it was for me.

Below me, the house reef of Rasdhoo in the Maldives drops away into the deep blue, and in the sunlight colorful fish glow everywhere. We only arrived on the island today, and I went straight from the room into the water. The fins still feel strange on my feet. I drift along the reef edge and can hardly get enough of it. Then there is a shark. I get an uneasy feeling, and I turn back. On the way toward the shore my heart beats faster than on the way out. When I look around, the shark is also swimming into the shallows. It pays no attention to me at all. It moves along close above the corals, and as agitated as I am, I can’t look away. In the shallow water and in this sunlight it looks beautiful.

The small reef sharks on the shallow reef are harmless for snorkelers in the Maldives, and seeing one of them is a good sign for the reef. In April 2025 and in August 2026, the sharks I came across there while snorkeling were mostly blacktip reef sharks. They are considered shy. Whitetip reef sharks are considered easygoing, nurse sharks move leisurely, and the whale shark eats plankton and small fish. You only see it on a boat tour.

What to do if you see a shark while snorkeling

Keep your distance and don’t swim after it. Distance applies to everything on the reef, including what looks harmless. Nothing gets touched. Much on the reef grows for decades and is broken in a second. Anyone who touches something also puts themselves at risk: fire corals sting, and lionfish sting.

On Rasdhoo, back on land, I told the owner of our accommodation and his dive chief about the shark at the house reef, and also about my uneasy feeling. The two of them smiled. They said the sharks came right up to the shore here, but they did nothing as long as nobody was holding a fish in their hand. Later the dive chief snorkeled along the reef with us as a family, and the fear was gone. How that came about is in the article about the shark at the house reef.

Our son was delighted about the sharks. From the conversations and in the water he noticed that the sharks aren’t interested in us and are very beautiful animals. He wasn’t the least bit scared.

Are there big sharks in the Maldives too?

The reef sharks I came across while snorkeling belong to the smaller species. I’m not sad about that. I wouldn’t want tiger sharks or bull sharks next to me, neither while snorkeling nor while diving. With them I would have an uneasy feeling every time I went into the water.

On the islands we were on, I didn’t see a tiger or bull shark. Local dive guides told us that these sharks are found farther out, not at the shallow reefs near the islands. The small, rather harmless sharks don’t bother me at all. I like watching them.

Reef sharks like this one at Turtle Reef off Rasdhoo pass by calmly while you snorkel.

Our dive guide at Madivaru Corner off Rasdhoo and our dive guide on Maalhos told us, when we asked, that Rasdhoo is a well-known place for hammerheads. The guide from Madivaru Corner is regularly in the water with them, and she had only good things to report. At the dive sites off Rasdhoo they are scalloped hammerheads, and they are considered shy. Even the air bubbles of divers easily scare them off.

Which sharks do you see while snorkeling in the Maldives?

I often saw blacktip reef sharks on the shallow stretch between the beach and the reef edge of Rasdhoo, sometimes only five meters away. These sharks live mainly in clear, shallow water close to the shore, and if a swimmer comes too close, they retreat. In the morning there were more animals of all different sizes out at the house reef, among them a reef manta and a Napoleon wrasse. With all those animals, there were also more sharks around. Once I was filming a mackerel when a whitetip reef shark swam into the shot.

For a completely different shark you need a boat tour. I saw it while snorkeling on the whale shark tour from Dhigurah. Whale sharks mostly swim against the current, so we are let into the water ahead of the animal. I look down, and the whale shark comes straight toward me and passes beneath me. In the sunlight its colors glow. Its movements are so slow, and yet it is so fast.

A young whale shark moves through blue water at full length off Dhigurah in the Maldives.
At five meters, our whale shark was still a young animal.

Afterwards we went on to a reef where only our boat was. We drifted along with the current and saw two very small reef sharks, one blacktip and one whitetip reef shark.

While diving at Madivaru Corner I saw about ten sharks, among them gray reef sharks and silver reef sharks. All of them made their rounds quite calmly and always kept their distance. It was a very relaxed dive. Gray reef sharks often stay at reef edges and in channels.

Sharks belong to a healthy reef. How many sharks live on a reef is closely linked to how heavily it is fished there. That was shown by the Global FinPrint research project, which studied hundreds of reefs worldwide with underwater cameras. I also had the feeling that I always saw the most different animals where there were also sharks.

Where can you snorkel with sharks in the Maldives?

At the Bikini Beach of Kamadhoo it was enough to go into the water from the beach to see blacktip reef sharks. Once we saw dolphins at the reef edge from land, and I snorkeled in their direction. On the way I saw a reef shark. It was quite far away and busy with small groups of fish.

At Turtle Reef off Rasdhoo, two or three blacktip reef sharks passed us at a distance while we were with the turtles. I experienced nurse sharks at their calmest in the evening at the jetty of Fulidhoo, without any mask at all. After dinner we went there almost every evening, and nurse sharks and stingrays came into the shallow water on their own.

Our son stood in the water with us. The rays came very close and glided over our feet. That got him excited, but not scared. A nurse shark lay very still next to us, as if it were asleep. We still kept an eye on the shark the whole time.

When is the best time to see sharks in the Maldives?

We experienced the end of the dry season in April 2025. Back then I was in the water right by our accommodation at the house reef of Rasdhoo and saw sharks, squid and lots of colorful fish. In August 2026, in the middle of the rainy season, I went into the water at the Bikini Beach of Rasdhoo, at a different section of the same reef. The animals were almost the same. The sharks were there again too.

We only did the whale shark tour from Dhigurah and the tour to Hanifaru Bay in August 2026. There are also whale sharks in Hanifaru Bay. The season there runs from May to December. Anyone who snorkels there at full moon during that time has a good chance of seeing mantas and whale sharks.

Shark feeding in the Maldives: what about these tours?

On a boat tour from Fulidhoo I experienced nurse sharks very differently than in the evening at the jetty. At one stop the boat crews had been feeding, and the sharks crowded all around me. One nudged me on the leg. It came from behind, and because I hadn’t seen it beforehand, it wasn’t a good feeling. It wasn’t the shark itself. Its skin felt smooth and rough at the same time. When there was a similar stop a week later on a tour from Rasdhoo, we stayed in the boat right away. I tell about it in my report on the nurse sharks.

Many nurse sharks, a ray and dense schools of fish crowd beneath the water's surface in the Maldives.
This is what it looks like when there is feeding.

I don’t recommend tours where sharks are fed. For the animals it is not a natural environment and not a natural situation. Outside of these tours I never saw nurse sharks while snorkeling. Without feeding you rarely see them in the water, because during the day they mostly lie in caves. Anyone booking a boat tour can ask beforehand whether there will be feeding at one of the stops.

My conclusion

Be glad if you come across a shark while snorkeling. The reef sharks I saw left us alone. I find them beautiful, the way they move along the reef.

Frequently asked questions

How rare are shark bites? Very rare. In its summary for the year 2025, the Florida Museum counts 65 confirmed unprovoked bites worldwide, one of them in the Maldives, which was not fatal. According to its announcement of February 18, 2026, three large species are behind most serious bites: the great white shark, the tiger shark and the bull shark. When snorkeling from the beach you never come across these three. And on boat tours you can rely on the guides.

How big are the sharks on the reefs? Blacktip reef sharks usually grow to around one and a half meters long. The two reef sharks after the whale shark tour were clearly smaller still.

Is this something for children too? For us it was. The dive chief snorkeled with us as a family at the house reef of Rasdhoo. Our son stood in the water with us at the jetty of Fulidhoo while a nurse shark lay next to us.

Are sharks protected in the Maldives? Since 2010, shark fishing has been banned in the waters of the Maldives. On November 1, 2025, an exception was reported: The fisheries ministry announced that deep-sea gulper sharks may be caught every year from December to June. The Blue Marine Foundation reports the news.

Do you see hammerheads while snorkeling? Hardly. The well-known spot for hammerheads off Rasdhoo is Hammerhead Point, a dive site of its own next to Madivaru Corner, and there they are a destination for experienced divers.

How the inhabited islands differ for snorkeling, I tell in my island comparison. In the Maldives, these islands are called local islands.
