Maldives with kids: our experiences on local islands

by · · updated · In the water: April 2025 and August 2026

  • local islands, not a resort
  • our son at six and at eight
  • pack mosquito repellent
  • April 2025 and August 2026

In short Which island fits depends on whether your child wants to play in the water or snorkel – Fulidhoo for playing, Rasdhoo or Kamadhoo for snorkeling from the beach.

Translated from the German original.

While snorkeling I estimated visibility, water temperature and depth, just as I experienced them on the days I was there. On dives the dive computer measured depth and duration, and values with a named source show what is usual there, not how it was for me.

Our son didn’t come into the water with us to see the mantas in Hanifaru Bay. That wasn’t because of the mantas. He had scratched open mosquito bites, and the salt water stung too much. That happened more than once on the trip.

It still worked. We have been to the Maldives with him twice, in April 2025 and in August 2026, both times on inhabited islands instead of at a resort. He has seen sharks and rays up close and was the first to spot a manta at the house reef of Rasdhoo. Which island suits you depends on whether your child wants to play in the water or snorkel. And mosquito protection goes right at the top of the packing list.

Which Maldives island suits you with kids?

The five islands we visited with our son are very different for playing and for snorkeling. A dash means: we didn’t experience anything there that we can pass on.

IslandPlaying in the waterSnorkeling from the beach
Fulidhooshallow, clear, no current, sandy bottomno reef reachable from the Bikini Beach
Rasdhoo—over a shallow reef to the edge, about 50 meters from the Bikini Beach
Dhigurahin the waves on the beach, long sandbankno easy way to the reef from the Bikini Beach
Kamadhoowater playground on the locals’ side of the beachthe reef begins after about 30 meters
Maalhos—reef close to the beach

Of our islands, Fulidhoo was suited for playing in shallow water, and Rasdhoo, Kamadhoo and Maalhos for snorkeling from the beach.

The Bikini Beach of Fulidhoo is shallow, clear and without current, and we were often in the water there with our son. In the evening, stingrays and nurse sharks came into the shallow water at the jetty, and our son stood in it with us. The rays glided over our feet, and he was excited about it, but not scared. What those evenings at the jetty of Fulidhoo were like I tell on the page about Fulidhoo.

Unlike on Fulidhoo, on Dhigurah in South Ari Atoll the waves were too rough on the first day to snorkel with our son. The next day I played with him in the waves, and I really enjoyed that. The island has a very long sandbank, on the beach there are loungers and swings you can use for free, and there is shade under palm trees everywhere.

At the Bikini Beach of Kamadhoo in Baa Atoll it’s the other way round. The reef begins thirty meters off the beach, the first corals already lie in the shallows, and there’s nothing to play with in the water there. You absolutely need water shoes. On the other hand, on the locals’ side of the beach there is a large water playground for children. Kamadhoo is neat and well organized. Maalhos is more natural and unspoiled, the care at our guesthouse was very family-like, and the reef there lies close to the beach.

We don’t know any resort. What is written here applies to inhabited islands.

From what age can children snorkel in the Maldives?

What matters is how confidently your child swims, and only you can judge that. Our son snorkeled at six at the house reef of Rasdhoo, holding the dive manager’s hand, and at eight with us over the shallow reef to the reef edge.

On boat trips, ask for a vest for your child. On the whale shark tour from Dhigurah, life jackets were ready for children and for anyone who wanted one. He was only in the water at the beginning there, because of the crowding.

If you snorkel on the reef with a child, explain beforehand that hands stay close to the body and that they keep their distance from the animals and the reef. Corals break from a single touch, and some things on the reef hurt whoever touches them: fire corals sting, lionfish sting.

At the house reef of Rasdhoo we also saw sharks in April 2025. Our son was happy about them. He wasn’t afraid. From conversations and in the water he noticed that they aren’t interested in us.

Can kids swim with the mantas?

Children may go along to the mantas if they swim confidently or wear a vest. The mantas are harmless, and in the water they move out of your way. We generally found the guides good and reliable.

In August 2026 we went into the water at the Bikini Beach on Rasdhoo. Our son first spotted a moray eel under a rock and five minutes later a reef manta, even before we saw it. The manta passed by about ten meters away, for about thirty seconds. Afterwards he was really proud.

Can children dive in the Maldives?

Yes, in a try-dive course. Ask the dive center on your island beforehand whether it offers a course for children and from what age. On Maalhos, at eight years old, our son did a Bubblemaker course, beyond the reef edge with about fifteen meters of visibility. He was super happy. He did all the exercises underwater without any problems, he was calm and relaxed, and every hand signal was right.

While diving he spotted lionfish. The day after, we saw them again while snorkeling at the house reef of Maalhos.

Do children get bored on a small island?

What thrilled our son most of all was the boat. In April 2025 on Rasdhoo, he was allowed to steer the boat on the way back from a snorkeling trip, the whole forty-five minutes back to the island. In August 2026 he steered it from Hanifaru Bay back to Maalhos, and the captain praised him a lot. On Rasdhoo he was allowed to drive it once more, this time right into the harbor.

If you ask him what was best on Maalhos, he says: riding the boat and diving. Not the turtles, the mantas or the colorful fish.

On Maalhos we built sandcastles on the beach in the evening. On Kamadhoo we had a rainy morning when we didn’t go into the water. That was fine. We spent the time on the beach and on the island, and with three weeks of vacation it was no big deal not to go into the water once.

Mosquitoes in the Maldives: how do you protect children?

Pack mosquito spray and something for after the bite. In August our son had lots of bites and scratched them open. After that he didn’t want to go into the water anymore, because the salt water stung.

Don’t sit under the trees. That’s where the mosquitoes gather, and usually just a few meters of distance mean far fewer bites.

Since the beginning of January 2026, the Federal Foreign Office has been reporting more dengue fever in the Maldives. It is transmitted by mosquitoes that bite during the day, especially during and shortly after the rainy season. Complications are rare among travelers. In children, according to the Foreign Office, the illness can in rare cases be severe. The Foreign Office advises light-colored, long clothing and mosquito protection on all exposed skin, during the day as well as in the evening. Which product suits which age is something a travel medicine consultation will clarify. There is no malaria in the Maldives.

How do children cope with the boat trips?

Our son coped well with the trip from Malé to Dhigurah. We went by speedboat through high waves, some fellow passengers felt sick, and he fell asleep on the way. The crossing from Dhigurah to Kamadhoo was very unpleasant; many fellow passengers threw up. He slept through all of it.

A harbor on an inhabited island in the Maldives in the early morning, boats lie in the calm water before the crossing.
Early at the harbor: between the islands you travel by boat.

Expect trips like that in the rainy season. On the trip to Dhigurah, what helped one fellow passenger was regularly splashing cold water on her face, staying in the fresh air and looking into the distance.

Maldives with kids: what do tours and boats cost for children?

The whale shark tour had a children’s price. The price list of the hotel on Kamadhoo, on the other hand, didn’t name a single one. So ask about excursion prices when choosing your accommodation, for children too.

ItemWhat it cost
Whale shark tour from Dhigurah90 US dollars for adults, 45 US dollars for children under 12 (August 2026)
Hanifaru trip from Maalhos70 US dollars per person according to the price list; we paid 150 euros for the three of us
Hanifaru Bay fee310 rufiyaa per person (official rate 2026); for our son, who stayed in the boat, it wasn’t charged
Seaplane Malé → Kamadhoo170 US dollars per person each way, children under 12 half price (offer, August 2026; we went by boat)
Speedboat Malé → Dhigurah204.75 US dollars for two adults and one child (August 2026)
public ferry (RTL) Kamadhoo → Maalhos190 rufiyaa for two adults and one child (August 2026)

Entry requirements for children traveling from Germany

Every child needs their own passport. According to the Federal Foreign Office, a children’s passport is only enough if it has not been extended or updated. In principle, the passport must still be valid for six months on entry. Temporarily, one month is currently enough (according to the Foreign Office, as of September 24, 2026). Every person, including every child, submits their own arrival declaration on the IMUGA portal before arrival, within 96 hours beforehand. The tourist visa for up to 30 days is issued free of charge on arrival.

There are no mandatory vaccinations for direct entry from Germany. The Foreign Office advises having children’s standard vaccinations up to date, and it points out that medical care is limited. Travel health insurance with repatriation is therefore part of it.

My conclusion

I can only recommend it and see no obstacles: our son was six once and eight the other time. We never had any problems. The locals are very fond of children, and if you pay attention, everything is safe too.

Frequently asked questions

What do children eat on an inhabited island?

Our son ate what we ate: mostly local, and we always insisted that nothing be spicy. That didn’t work completely reliably. On Maalhos, my wife’s food still came spicy several times; only on the last evening did it work. Without being asked, the staff there always brought little sweets.

Maldives local island or resort with kids?

We only know the inhabited islands. There you stay in guesthouses and small hotels and take a boat for excursions. What it’s like with a child at a resort, we can’t say.

Which island is good for playing in shallow water?

Of our islands, that was Fulidhoo with its shallow Bikini Beach without current. On Dhigurah we played in the waves, and on Kamadhoo there is a large water playground on the locals’ side of the beach.

From what age can children dive?

That is set by the course. At PADI the Bubblemaker try-dive course is possible from age eight, and breathing takes place at less than two meters of depth (as of September 24, 2026).

Where can you swim in a bikini on an inhabited island?

According to the Federal Foreign Office, outside the resorts there are signs on some beaches, for example in Malé or near guesthouses, saying that a bikini is not permitted there. For tourists, every island we know had its own section of beach, the Bikini Beach.
